I read the first chapter and knew this was a gem, so I tucked it away for my upcoming vacation for when I had an entire day to read. But the story wouldn’t leave me alone; I’d already been hooked and had to read more about Jeannette Walls’ fascinating grandmother. What a great story of growing up in rural West Texas at the turn of the century, this book’s as much for history buffs and those interested in women’s studies as it is for biography fans. But above all, it’s a great story and it’s told darn well.
